"The Maths Adventurers" is a book series published by DK Books that introduces kids aged 5-7 to basic mathematical concepts! This first book is all about discovering how a 2D shape can turn into a 3D object.
Here's the process I follow when working on a children's book:
The first step is defining the main characters, in this case, Beep, the kid robot, and Boots the Cat! Then usually, I make a sketch and a colored version of one of the pages to define the style and color palette for the whole project.
Once all the sketches have been approved, what helps a lot is planning the entire book's color scheme in advance. As you can see below, the thumbnails are very rough, but they show the client what to expect from the final illustrations and make the coloring process much easier!
In between stages, there's always time to share feedback and make changes if needed.
